Nicht Heimat, aber mein Zuhause

That which – in addition to ones memories – can be taken in a foreign country is often not much: a banal appearing object, a familiar word. I have portraited 35 students of the Afro-Asiatisches Institut und der Katholischen Hochschulgemeinde in Graz. With things that get important in the course of their lifes, and with words that carry even far away from the familiar places. The Quartier Leech can never be „home“ in the classic sense of the word for these students, but it can be a home away from home.

Das, was neben der Erinnerung in ein fremdes Land mitgenommen werden kann, ist oft nicht viel: ein banal anmutender Gegenstand, ein vertrautes Wort. Ich habe 35 Studierende des Afro-Asiatischen Instituts und der Katholischen Hochschulgemeinde in Graz portraitiert. Mit Dingen, die im Laufe ihres Lebens an Bedeutung gewonnen haben, und mit Worten, die auch fernab von Vertrautem tragen. Heimat im klassischen Wortsinn wird diesen Studierenden das Quartier Leech nie werden können – sehr wohl aber ein Zuhause.
